Biography

Following completion of my Bachelor’s degree, I spent one year working as a social Worker with Kurdish Life Aid (KLA), supported by the UK Department for International Development (DFID). This role provided me with extensive experience in implementing health awareness programmes focused on hygiene and sanitation across 92 villages, as well as involvement in Child-to-Child programmes.

Subsequently, I gained hands-on experience in Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) techniques during a three-month placement at a juvenile centre funded by Save the Children Fund (SCF–UK), where children were supported to express their concerns through storytelling and drawing activities. I later joined the Kurdish Organization for Mine Awareness (KOMA) as a Field Operations Officer, where I was responsible for coordinating twelve teams working on mine awareness and community safety initiatives.

While continuing to work part-time, I completed my Master’s degree, which focused on the role of international NGOs and government institutions in supporting disabled children, particularly those injured or disabled by landmines. As part of this programme, I spent three months at Canterbury Christ Church University in the United Kingdom, where I completed modules on social work with disabled people and older adults. My Master’s dissertation, entitled “The Role of Government Institutions and NGOs in Taking Care of Physically Disabled People,” revealed widespread experiences of physical and emotional abuse of disabled children by parents and caregivers.

Following the completion of my Master’s degree in 2007, I was appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Salahaddin University, where I taught courses in Social Problems, Industrial Sociology, and Rural Society. In 2009, with the support of Ersta Sköndal University in Sweden, I played a central role in establishing the Department of Social Work at Salahaddin University—the first social work department in the Kurdistan Region.

My academic career between 2007 and 2011 further enhanced my awareness and understanding of child punishment and maltreatment in Kurdistan through sustained engagement with child welfare institutions, childcare centres, and juvenile facilities. Several years of professional and academic involvement in these fields provided me with substantial experience and insight into collecting relevant and sensitive data on child maltreatment.

In 2020, I was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sociology and Social Policy from Durham University, United Kingdom, Faculty of Social Sciences and Health, Department of Sociology. My doctoral thesis, entitled “Child Punishment and Maltreatment in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq: Causes and Consequences – A Field Study in Erbil City,” examined the underlying factors and social consequences of child punishment and maltreatment within the regional context
